That hole on the side street might have been one there were heavy machinery tracks and dirt. If it was a flat one with dirt on it could have been impossible to find. You’d think that corner would have em but looks like a bad design I guess. When the streets were repaved old street designs weren’t great but a lot of it was done quick and cheap. Not enough thought to where the water was going. Friend of mine has a puddle almost year round because of a new new handicap crosswalk. The river is across the street but it creates this low triangle. They removed the speed hump cuz it had the whole entrance flooded always. A dip in the main road would channel it into the rouge. Nice neighborhood too by the park the neighbors keep it clean mowed n swept. But they get a mosquito pond on the corner crosswalk to the park. Supposed to be part of the new area that channels flood water into rebuilt park space with wetland boardwalks. Shame the little important details get left out, could do something while they rework the park. Supposed to keep water out of thousands of basement, but this one spot has water still in the street days after it rains.

The double swirl is called the fujiwara effect, hurricanes do that one eats the other eventually apparently. Those damn locust trees man you rip up your lawn raking the little leaves. The American Elm was everywhere back in the day my dad says every street was like a tunnel cuz they’d weep over a little like a willow. It was the city’s tree someone brought a flower from Netherlands in the 60’s and Dutch Elm blight killed all the trees in the 70’s. They spray some to keep ‘em alive like on Grand River in Redford and Farmington to 8 Mile & at Greenfield Village. The Chinese Elm doesn’t get it but it’s a scraggly looking tree. I bet Royal Oak did that stupid little two hole thing cuz the sewer can’t handle the water. There’s one going south to the treatment plant for all of Royal Oak, Birmingham, Sterling Heights, Warren, Hazel Park, Madison Heights, Ferndale, Eastside of Detroit and basically along Woodward. My mom worked in Warren when everything flooded they had to do water rescues at Buddys and Home Depot. She was stranded but she got a room before they all filled up cuz no one was getting out. All the GM workers, the Army & the company that builds tanks are all there so there was a mad rush for rooms. I swear though I grew up in Farmington the Rouge flooded everything for a quarter mile the year before I was born. They took 13 year but took an old dump no one could build on dug it out and let it fill up. They have these rocks that only let a just enough water out when it got full. We had those monster drains with the overflow in the back too in 20 years it’s never flooded out the city again. They leave like 14 and Halstead a swamp and just shut a gate & let it flood leaves all us dry. I’ve said this 4 times but with open lots anyone could do that if not the city someone could buy a couple land bank lots. Get friends to come out with a jackhammer or something break the sidewalk dip it down and let overflow go into a deep pond. You could get fancy use bricks and plywood to cast new cement walkway over it. Build an arch im sure it’s not legal but if no one is gonna fix it and you don’t have a natural place to let the water go build one. Kids could learn masonry skills, find a welder to make new drain covers like im trying to think how to turn a profit to pay for itself. Maybe someone would need to start a recycling company that buy and sell scrap & get together with a welder.

Im glad you ended up safe with that water and the lines burning. Happy to see a Detroit neighborhood coming together. Like people might think dude is a one man army but a lot of neighborhoods not even rich ones do. Not that it takes away from the hard work it helped the community but sad to see the hood videos get the most views. Though that’s where help is needed so is what it is.

It was a tornado a small one I was out in Farmington Hills waiting for my uncle and aunt to come in from Dallas. I was in the sun room watching the wind and rain come in and it got not normal the trees bent 50% and I ran in cuz a big oak was over me. Went walking found trees along Minnow Pond Creek all knocked around in different directions like a whole chunk of woods size of a football field gone.

It takes a community to care there’s not enough people on that street even if the assholes who dumped didnt. The apartments are the only people on that part of the block the city, state or feds should come in with a backhoe and cement and dig a pond. It’s been done in the nice neighborhoods you dig under the low area fill it with rock and sand so it soaks and doesn’t clog the raised up large drain. Have a driveway entry for the water to go down and soak in the ground. Let some trees and cattails grow up around it nature does what it does let the field take overflow and leaves. Have a big grate high up in the middle of the pond so it doesn’t get foul let it fill up and drain. It would make the neighborhood a nicer place people could chill have a fire pit and some stones or logs to sit around. It goes both ways gotta get people to care and why should they if they’re abandoned. Thanks man for what you do.

The people of the city pay for services in the fall the city should schedule days for people to park wherever off the street. Send the sweepers through and make it easier on the people to keep up. If it gets to a point where you’re on your own it gets tiring to come out when you got work to clear the drain. What the hell the crews still dumping for that’s corruption they might not get paid to clean up but that’s wrong. Either pay overtime for clean up and if the city or contractors dump get the plate and call the police or city hall. Bring the whole block downtown until the department responsible hears and fixes. Is that by the new Stallantis plant btw? Anyways if city employees did the dumping that’s corruption they need to find out if it’s just lazy or if it’s more like they gotta pay gas to go to a specific site out of town. But if it’s contractors the city needs to make them pay to fix it and start using crews accountable to the people they flood out. People live in downstairs flats in some places or they could have affordable housing if shit like that didn’t happen.

The real problem two fold old infrastructure. They’re doing Tele right with all 3 countries chipping in new style surface grates and channels built into the road. Check out the new Grand River eastbound turn off at telegraph. The other is there’s over 1,000 lakes in the hills above the city and other than the Rouge River all the creeks are underground. The new streets are better but the old sewers all go to the Zug Island treatment plant. The low spots down by Rouge Park, Jefferson Chalmers & the main line that empties the really built up areas like Royal Oak all go down like John R. They’re single use sewers too so storm and sewage. Third point an inch of rain used to be a huge storm we get 2-4-6 inches hundred year rain events a decade. You live in Nortown at 7 and Van Dyke the homes are beautiful but I bet they basements flood if we get over two inches. They need to rebuild the eastside sewers but Macomb would have to and they even keep their own pipes working and they got rich burbs up north. They just won’t pay for the taxes that’s why they got stores blowing up won’t pay taxes for inspectors. Y’all remember that green shit that came out on 696 and John R onto the freeway? Red Run had a chemical spill a month before the vape store blew up and killed that kid. All the rich Lake front owners in Harrison Twp are mad cuz they got muck in their boat docks. Oakland County enforces codes you build on a wetland you replace it bigger and keep the water in creeks or ditches. Rouge Park gets it bad but they’re building overflow wetlands so the single use storm sewers can just put extra water in the wetlands they built over. There’s enough room in the Rouge Parks and places like off Gratiot & 94 to build wetland overflows. Just dig it out makes a neighborhood nice to have a pond and a creek instead of water in the street & basement. It’s cheap to dig up an abando factory lot or a part of street with no homes and make it like it was before they paved over everything. Detroit could have the nicest inner city with little creeks and ponds going out to the lake or river instead of flooded streets. Highland Park just got state assistance to rebuild its water & sewer the NE & Davidson could never have a flooded basement if they diverted storm water to retention ponds south of 94 that are open to the sky. It’s gonna take a ton of money to make every street prefect and it would still flood with the way the eastside sewer network is. Macomb County should have wetlands to soak it up they don’t like western Wayne or most of Oakland. They need to fix it for their own folks if not the city that takes care of their water after them. I come home to my girls place on 12 & Ryan at 1130 and her basement apartment is flooded had to shop vac it up haul it up the stairs all night till home depot opened. Thank god it was just clear rain, home girl down on Livernois got the nasty downstairs. I hope this whole 696, tele, Grand River sewer and street fix take the pressure off the rest of the city. Then rebuilding the drains will mean a lot more for a lot less, unless they just want to create construction jobs & pay contractor friends. The city finally has a 10 year long budget surplus crime down to decades low got to spend that $$$ smart. Fix the shit that needs fixing like they doing with city services it’s day and night difference but the roads are smooth but they still pond. They’re a lot of boulevards create water garden retention ponds like they did down on Oakman at Warren the leaves flow in there and act as fertilizer for the flowers and trees. We have a smart mayor and the least corrupt city maybe ever cuz it always was. 10 years off bankruptcy we’re on the front page of the Wall Street Journal as the model city to fix all other empty downtowns and the downward spiral. A day later two positive New York Times articles. I appreciate what you guys do it’s right and helps the community especially the elderly and you gotta do what you gotta do but with taxes so high cuz of the lost population we got to make bold moves. It’s cheap to live here so it evens out but with housing prices rising highest in the nation that’s more money to fix the city. We got one last shot to do it right. There’s over 6 million people in the area but we don’t matter almost 90% live in the suburbs or cities like Windsor or Ann Arbor. 7 million if you include Toledo and Lansing that’s 10 times the city’s population we need the region to keep caring and the ones who don’t maybe they get left out and have to get well water next to a septic tank out on 30 mile road.
